FALKLAND ISLANDS
As bleak a place as you could wish for. The most interesting bits are bleak. The boring bits where no one lives because you'd go mad it's so bleak are only marginally less bleak and wet than the sea itself. The only realistic way of getting there is by the RAF who actually take paying passengers, but it's not cheap unless you are in the RAF or a dependant. MPA:- Truly in the middle of nowhere, this is a British military base which doubles the FI population. Stanley:- A collection of several hundred tin huts in the middle of a minefield. Locals usually friendly. The Upland Goose is a half reasonable bar. Lots of wrecked ships around. A long drive along a gravel road from the MPA airport. See the whales jaw bones by the 'cathedral'!
Weddel Island:- Great for a bit of wildlife watching. Dolphins, penguins of various types, geese, ducks, seals, Patagonian foxes etc., all easily spotted. Quite a collection of bushes by FI standards as well.
Mikes tips:- Play spot the bush for entertainment. Take lots of Gore-tex. Don’t remove ‘mine’ signs for souvenirs. Don’t go in the minefields. In the country don’t pick up anything man-made unless you are 100% positive it is not a munition of some kind. Take a battlefield tour.
Mikes tips:- get invited to a bar and get drunk if you can’t avoid being here in the first place. Friday night is best but there is some form of home-grown entertainment on somewhere every night. Visitors are generally very welcome. Be careful in the bars- they are all rigged with booby trap excuses for you to buy a round, or slab. All beer is sold in tins and shorts are only available in the officer and sergeants clubs. A wagon can be hired from most bars.
Mikes tip:- Only really easy way to get here is to join the RAF and volunteer for a tour at MPA.
